I've got photos on my USB key all ready to post but now this particular computer doesn't have a USB outlet! Promise, they'll be up tomorrow!
This town is fantastic! The weather's divine, and people are very friendly. Feel perfectly at ease here, perhaps because I'm used to living in Paris. It really does resemble Paris in many ways. Not only the architecture and avenues, but also the "elegance" of the people. They dress very smartly and are quite svelte. The overall impression is of "sexiness". I find the Argentinian men very "seduisants". They're tall, tan and well-dressed! And the gals are beautiful. So thin! I read somewhere, though, that 10% of the women are anorexic! And A French gal I had lunch with yesterday said Argentinians are overly preocuppied with how they look. Be as it may, they certainly are attractive.
But there aren't any dark-skinned people here. In Mexico, it was so mixed. Here, you don't see any people of Indian blood. There are a lot of Italian immigrants, of course, but over all, the impression is one of homogenity.
In the evenings, you do see what I'd liked to call "bag people". They have huge canvas sacks on wheels and go from garbage can to garbage can collecting cartons and paper. Wonder what they do with it.
Last night, I attended a huge tango lesson at the Armenian Cultural Center. An Argentinian dance group rents the center several nights a week and gives lessons to about 250 people for 8 pesos (about $2.50) a person. I went with Paul, the owner of the hostel, and his adorable Swedish girlfriend. They danced and I watched! I'll add some photos tomorrow. It took place in the Soho part of Palermo. Great neighborhood, with cafes, restaurants, etc.
This is a young people's town. Lots of partying going on. But, funnily enough, you see a lot of single women out in groups, too. The overall atmosphere is young, though. I don't mind going out alone--it's safe enough--but it'd be so much more fun to have a friend here with me to share all this. It's a great town.
Thanks, Danielle, for the tip about Cafe Tortoni. This is a great, Cafe Flore type of place off the Plaza de Mayo. It's famous for coffee, but I had a glass of red wine and a nice open sandwich here this evening for $3. Hope to go back sometime in the evening and take in their tango show.
Yesterday, i visited the Malba Art Museum. It has modern works of art from all over Latin America.
Must close, this place is closing!
