Six former grade school classmates get together.: Hilary, Cathy, Sue, Christine, Angele and Candy

San Francisco, Sunday, December 3

I put up some photos earlier in the week and will post more when I get to an Internet cafe. Sorry, but this is always a two-step process, as the computers I use in public libraries don't permit the uploading of photos.

This week has been very busy and fun. Needless to say, the translation of my book isn't advancing very rapidly, but--hey--how often do I get back to San Francisco?

Probably because I'm only here for a few weeks, I seem to be having a busier "social life" than in Paris! Here's what I did this past week: lunch with a childhood friend in a North Beach landmark cafe; drink and listening to music with another girlfriend and her husband at O'Reilley's, an Irish-style pub and another North Beach landmark; ferry ride across the Bay on a lovely late afternoon to and from Jack London Square in Oakland where I had dinner with a new friend; luncheon at "my" place for two former teaching colleagues; luncheon at the Metropolitan Women's Club wih 5 childhood friends from grade school; matinee performance of the play "Doubt" (on tour, post Broadway, with Tony award-winning Cherry Jones as a Catholic nun who accuses a priest of child molestation--a truly great performance); lunch at the French cafe of the Alliance Francaise with two friends from school; trip down to the Peninsula to see and sit-in on the class of a friend who teaches Intercultural Communication at a community college and has an extremely multicultural class; visit with her to a Japanese garden in Saratoga; coffee at Kepler's bookshop in Menlo Park; seeing the great new film "Bobby" (it portrays real and fictional events leading up to Bobby Kennedy's assassination--I'm sure it'll be a hit in France); seeing the ballet/musical "Edward Scissorhands" (fantastic pre-Broadway adaptation of Tim Burton's cinemagraphic spoof on suburbia America).

And I'm now off to a walking tour of Mission Dolores and the multi-ethnic murals in the Mission District of the City!!!

As you can see, I'm having a grand time. In fact, I wake up every morning thinking how lucky I am to be in such a lovely and fun placeand staying in a truly super apartment at a wonderful location. But, of course, I'm also looking forward to Portland, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile...

Retirement sure is great...

Salut Hilary! I love the pix of San Francisco. Beautiful blue sky! If you're looking for a good Afghan restaurant, check out The Helmand in North Beach. Their cousins run the Helmand here in Cambridge (Karzai's sister is the owner). Delicious food & nice ambience. We had our first snow today but it quickly melted. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Keep us posted on the translation of your book. maura
